The Moses Pole is the original temporary docking system for steadicam operators. We offer 4 variations of the Moses Pole. There are 2 and 3 piece poles which require assembly for use but are compact enough to ship easily. The telescoping poles come with 2 or 5 holes.
Let me make a pitch for the telescoping Moses pole. I’m a camera asst. I actually worked with the Moses pole creator 13-15 yrs ago when it was a fixed pole. I absolutely hated it. It was awkward & clunky. I couldn’t do my other duties as an ac while I carried that thing. My hands were tied. So invariably, I’d put it down to re-mark or help my focus puller get marks, etc. Then the steadi op would need a break but neither I nor the pole were nearby. About 5 yrs ago, we worked together again & this time he had the telescoping pole. I absolutely loved it. It had a sling so I could throw that thing on my back & it’d be with me every where & always when the rig was out. Either the dolly grip or I would wear it & we’d have hands free to do other work. Then when it was time for a break, one quick pull & it was rest time. Really nice for those long runs where the stand is at one end of the street & the end of the scene is far away. I know its a couple hundred more than the fixed poles but if you’re going to spend that much to begin with, better to have one that’s always there when ya need it. Just the perspective from one of the guys that carries the pole & not the rig.
Also, I prefer the 2 hole over the 5 hole telescoping pole b/c of rapid deployment. Most steadiwork is in “normal” mode. So when the op wants a break, the asst/grip can pull the pole out to the 2nd hole in a matter of seconds. Sometimes there’s not much time for a break so the more time ya get, the better. The 5 hole offers a lot of different heights which is super helpful if you are in low mode for example but if you are in “regular” mode, its going to take at least twice as long to deploy the pole as you have 3 stops along the way before ya get to the last hole. Each stop requires depressing the button to get to the next one. In my opinion its better to just add another docking ring at the “top” when in low mode so you can hang it up. Also makes for a more secure stand as all the weight is lower down. Just my opinion.
