Steadicam Offset Bracket, the low mode J bracket, in straight or angled, three post diameters. $250, free shipping.

Low mode on a Steadicam rig is one of those shots that looks effortless on screen and is genuinely awkward to execute. You’re crouched or bent over, the rig is inverted, and you’re trying to operate smoothly while staying out of frame and not tripping over your own feet. The Clean’s Steadicam Offset Bracket, also called the low mode bracket or J bracket, is the piece that makes low mode actually workable.

It connects yer arm to the sled’s post, offsetting the center section away from the arm socket so the rig can drop lower than it could with a direct connection. The result: camera closer to the ground, operator in a more manageable position, shot in the can.

Myles put it plainly: “The best low mode bracket option out there.” Chun Fung Kevin C. went further: “Indispensable solve for safe low mode operation, really made it that much easier to get the camera down extra low while having a comfortable grip to operate.” Twenty-five reviews, 4.96 out of 5. This one’s a proven piece of kit.

Straight or Angled, which one do you need?

This is the most important choice on this page, so here it is clearly:

Straight, the classic J bracket geometry. Offsets the sled away from the arm for low mode operation. If you know you need a J bracket and don’t have a specific reason to go angled, this is the default.

Angled, same function, but the bracket geometry kicks the sled out and away from the operator’s feet. When you’re in low mode, the sled naturally wants to swing toward your legs, the angled version fights that, giving you more clearance between the rig and your feet so you can move more freely and operate without the constant threat of the rig clipping you mid-shot. If you’ve ever felt cramped or tangled up in low mode, the angled bracket is the one to look at.

Both versions come in all three post diameters.

Post diameter, match it to your rig:

  • ½″, for smaller rigs. Post has parallel holes only.
  • ⅝″, standard size for many mid-range Steadicam systems. Posts have both parallel and perpendicular holes (as of March 2024).
  • ¾″, for larger, heavier rigs. Posts with both parallel and perpendicular holes.

Every bracket ships with one 4″ post and locking pin included. If 4″ isn’t the right length for your build, custom length posts are available separately at the Steadicam Custom Post page, just spec the diameter and length you need.

Not sure if yer rig will play nice? Reach out before ordering. Nathan Meade had a Frankenstein rig with a 3/4″ gimbal receiver that didn’t quite match up to spec, David machined him a custom post so the bracket would fit his setup perfectly. That’s the kind of service that comes standard here.

USA-machined aluminum. Covered by the lifetime repair policy, send it back at any time, fixed at a modest price, no expiration date. Replacement hardware available via McMaster-Carr if you ever need an airplane pin, flathead screw, or set screw, links are in the product listing.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Steadicam Offset Bracket:

What’s the difference between the angled and straight versions?
Both offset the sled away from the arm for low mode. The angled version additionally kicks the rig out and away from the operator’s feet, giving you more clearance to move without the sled swinging into your legs. If you shoot a lot of low mode and feel cramped, go angled. If you’re unsure, the straight is the standard starting point.

What post diameter do I need?
Match it to your rig’s arm receiver: ½″ for smaller rigs, ⅝″ for most mid-range systems, ¾″ for larger/heavier builds. If you’re not sure, check your arm documentation or the spec on your existing post.

What if I need a longer post than 4″?
The bracket ships with a 4″ post. For a longer post, order a Steadicam Custom Post separately in the matching diameter and your preferred length.

My rig is non-standard, will this fit?
Probably, but reach out first. David has machined custom posts for operators with unusual rig configurations. Contact via the Contact page before ordering if you’re uncertain.

Is it covered by the lifetime repair policy?
Yes. USA-machined, send it back at any time, fixed at a modest price, no matter the age.

I purchased the 3/4" Steadicam Offset Bracket for low mode on my rig. The bracket is solidly built and well thought out with multiple holes in the 4" post for safety with the locking pins. But more importantly Clean's service was top-notch! My rig is an older "frankestein" rig, and although it is supposed to have the standard 3/4" sized receiver on the gimbal things didn't quite match up. I reached out to David and he machined me a custom post so I could use the bracket with my rig. It fit perfectly!
